Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of the main challenges with single-vehicle wrecks is that they don’t always get the attention they deserve. I can’t begin to count how many times families have come to me concerned that authorities just glanced at their loved one’s accident and moved on without a second thought. My response is almost always the same—follow up with the authorities, find out what they’re looking into, and see if there are signs they’re not being thorough enough.
Are authorities pulling vehicle data? Have they secured phone records? Did they look for video cameras at nearby homes or businesses? Have they inspected the vehicle for potential defects? Did they determine if their was a tire blowout? Is there any sign of other vehicles being involved? Does this stretch of road get a lot of accidents?
Likely or not, a proper accident reconstruction should be able to cover all of these factors and more. If authorities can show they’re covering all angles and letting the evidence speak for itself, that’s a good sign. But if their explanations only scratch the surface, and it seems they’re not focusing on preserving evidence, families might decide they need someone else looking things over so they know nothing important is slipping through the cracks.
