Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle experiences problems on the road, the situation can change in an instant—especially if surrounding drivers can’t react in time. Multi-vehicle collisions like this one often have more moving parts than they first appear to.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
In a chain-reaction crash, investigators need to piece together the exact sequence of impacts. Did they determine how much warning following drivers had before the initial collision? Was there enough time and distance for them to avoid it? Proper scene mapping and witness statements are key in answering those questions.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
If the first vehicle slowed because of mechanical trouble, it’s important to understand what caused it—engine failure, transmission issues, or something else. Likewise, the striking vehicles could have had braking or steering problems that made avoiding the crash impossible.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Event data recorders from all three vehicles could shed light on speeds, braking, and steering inputs. Combined with any traffic camera or dashcam footage, this information can help confirm exactly how the accident unfolded.
The clearer the picture investigators can form, the more confidence everyone can have in understanding why things happened the way they did.
Takeaways:
- Mechanical issues in any vehicle can be a critical factor in multi-vehicle crashes.
- Crash data from all involved vehicles can reveal precise speeds and driver reactions.
- Scene reconstruction helps establish how quickly events developed before impact.
