When a single-vehicle crash results in a fatality, people often assume that driver error was the primary cause. However, my experience investigating crashes has shown that these incidents are often more complex than they appear. Before reaching any conclusions, it’s important to ensure that the investigation answers three key questions.

First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Law enforcement officers will likely document vehicle positions, take measurements, and assess roadway conditions. However, the depth of their investigation depends on available resources and training. Key questions include: Was the curve properly marked with warning signs? Were the road conditions a factor—such as wet pavement, loose gravel, or an uneven surface? Did investigators check for evidence of another vehicle’s involvement, such as tire marks suggesting an evasive maneuver? Without a comprehensive review, important details could go unnoticed.

Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? A sudden loss of control raises concerns about potential mechanical failure. Did the Ford F-150 experience a brake malfunction, steering failure, or tire blowout? Modern vehicles are equipped with electronic stability control systems designed to prevent skidding and rollovers—was this system functioning properly? Additionally, since the crash resulted in a rollover, it’s worth examining whether the truck’s design or modifications played a role in its stability. Unfortunately, vehicle defects are rarely explored unless someone takes steps to preserve the vehicle and conduct a forensic analysis.

Finally, has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected? The vehicle’s electronic control module (ECM) likely contains crucial data such as speed, braking, and steering input in the moments before impact. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or residences may provide insight into what happened leading up to the crash. If distraction is a question, cell phone records could help clarify whether the driver was using their phone at the time. The problem is that this evidence isn’t automatically preserved—ECM data can be overwritten, video footage is often deleted within days, and vehicles may be quickly salvaged before they can be examined. Securing this information quickly is critical.

At the end of the day, crashes like this leave families and survivors with difficult questions. When a vehicle unexpectedly loses control, the least we can do as a community is ensure that every possible factor is examined so that those affected have the answers they deserve.
