Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Any time a vehicle flips, it’s a violent event—one that often leaves lasting consequences. Even in crashes where the cause seems clear, it’s important not to let quick explanations close the door on deeper, more meaningful questions.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
In multi-vehicle collisions, especially those involving a rollover, it’s vital that investigators go beyond just taking witness statements and measuring skid marks. Did they laser-map the scene to capture the exact positions and angles of impact? Did they reconstruct the sequence of lane changes and speeds to understand how contact led to such a serious outcome? Not all officers have the advanced training needed for this kind of work, and if that kind of expertise wasn’t on site, some key details could go unexamined.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When a vehicle loses control and rolls after being clipped, it’s worth considering if something else went wrong inside the Ford. Was there a suspension failure? Did the steering lock up or overreact? Modern pickups carry a high center of gravity, and even minor contact can trigger a rollover—especially if stability controls aren’t working right. A proper mechanical inspection could reveal if something contributed beyond just the lane change.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Between both vehicles, there’s a wealth of data that could clarify what happened—speed changes, steering inputs, brake usage, and even lane assist alerts. The Ford’s onboard systems might show whether the driver tried to correct after being struck, or if the vehicle’s systems failed to respond as they should. And if there’s any dashcam or phone data, it could confirm key moments the human eye might have missed.

It’s easy to accept the first version of a crash when the facts seem straightforward. But real answers don’t always live on the surface—they often take work to uncover. Making sure that work gets done is how we get closer to the truth.

Takeaways:

  • Rollover crashes need deep-dive scene analysis to understand how they happened.
  • Even small impacts can trigger big consequences if vehicle systems fail.
  • Data from both vehicles could reveal the full story—not just part of it.
