Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Single-vehicle rollovers can be complex events, and when the cause isn’t immediately clear, it’s important that investigators take a closer look beyond the surface-level details.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
To understand why this pickup lost control, investigators should carefully document skid marks, debris patterns, and any signs of steering or braking before the rollover. These details can help determine whether the driver overcorrected, swerved to avoid something, or experienced another issue that caused the loss of control.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When a rollover occurs without obvious cause, mechanical problems like a tire blowout, steering malfunction, or suspension failure have to be considered. A detailed inspection of the pickup could reveal whether something went wrong that made the crash unavoidable.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
The truck’s onboard data recorder may hold valuable information about speed, braking, and steering input just before the rollover. Combining this with any nearby surveillance footage could help clarify what happened in those crucial moments leading up to the crash.
Determining the full cause of a rollover is essential, not just for accountability but also for understanding whether any hidden dangers contributed to the driver’s injuries.
Takeaways:
- A detailed scene analysis can reveal why the pickup lost control.
- Mechanical issues should be ruled out through a proper vehicle inspection.
- Onboard data can help investigators piece together the events leading up to the crash.
