It’s still early in the investigations, and that means authorities should be working to preserve as much evidence as possible. A lot of people take that for granted, but not all investigations are equally thorough. It sometimes takes following up with authorities to make sure they’re actually digging into the facts.

For example, I often have single-vehicle wrecks come across my desk where authorities haven’t bothered looking for electronic evidence. Are there any nearby cameras that caught the incident on video? Have they pulled date from the vehicle to look at things like braking and steering? Does the vehicle have crash avoidance systems that can be inspected for defects? Have they pulled cellphone and GPS data?

A lot of this evidence is time-sensitive, and it might be deleted or overwritten if steps aren’t taken early on to preserve it. So if authorities are taking steps to preserve electronic evidence, that’s a good sign they’re taking the investigations seriously. If they’re not looking into that, however, the crash may need independent investigators stepping in and picking up the slack.
