When a vehicle crosses the center line and causes a collision, it’s easy to assume that driver error was the cause. However, without a full investigation, it’s impossible to know for sure. Many different factors—ranging from road conditions to mechanical failures—could have contributed. To truly understand what happened, three key questions must be asked.
The first question is whether authorities conducted a thorough investigation. While law enforcement will document the crash, the depth of their analysis can vary. Did officers check for road hazards, such as debris, potholes, or slick pavement? Were witness statements collected to determine if another vehicle played a role? Did investigators explore the possibility of a medical emergency or driver fatigue? Without a careful review of these details, critical information may be missed, making it difficult to get a complete picture of what led to the crash.
Next, has anyone considered the possibility of a vehicle defect? While driver mistakes are often assumed to be the cause of a center-line crossing, mechanical issues can also play a role. Steering malfunctions, brake failures, or tire blowouts can cause a driver to lose control without warning. Additionally, given that the Transit passenger lost their life, it’s worth asking whether safety systems like seatbelts and airbags performed as they should have. If these possibilities aren’t explored, an important contributing factor could go unnoticed.
Finally, has all available electronic data been collected? The electronic control modules (ECMs) in both vehicles may contain key information about speed, braking, and steering in the moments leading up to the crash. Additionally, surveillance cameras, dash cams, and even cell phone data could provide further insight into what happened. If this evidence isn’t preserved quickly, it could be lost, making it much harder to establish the full circumstances of the collision.
Crashes like this leave families with difficult questions, and they deserve clear answers. Ensuring a thorough investigation isn’t just about explaining what happened—it’s about making sure that no critical detail is overlooked so that those affected have the information they need to move forward.
