How Did This Accident Occur?
People usually assume single-vehicle accidents always happen because a driver messed up. To be frank, things like unsafe speeds, fatigue, and distracted driving are quite common. But there are plenty of reasons a car can lose control without the driver doing anything wrong.
For example, tire blowouts are pretty common. They’re usually sudden and unavoidable, and they can actually quite challenging to investigate since it’s important to rule out a potential defect with the tire. But I’ve read hundreds and hundreds of police reports, and I rarely see authorities note the condition of the tires. And even when they do, it’s rarely after the sort careful inspection an independent accident reconstructionist would conduct. This means important details could be slipping through the cracks.
Maybe this crash didn’t involve any kind of tire issues. It’s not my place to say one way or the other. Rather, that’s one possible factor that’s important for investigators to look into. If authorities don’t do that, I wouldn’t blame anyone for wondering if they were overlooking other important factors.
If anyone’s ever been in a single-vehicle crash they couldn’t avoid, share your experience in the comments.
