How Did This Accident Occur?

People might be quick to assume that an early morning car crash like this must have been the result of fatigue. That’s common, of course, but it’s far from the only factor worth considering. In fact, a common issue I encounter in my line of work is authorities focusing too narrowly on a few common possible factors without considering less common or more complex issues. That’s when mistakes can happen.

For example, I can’t remember the last time I saw police talk about road maintenance. If a stretch of road is full of potholes, covered in debris, lacking clear lines or reflectors, or missing signage or lighting, it can lead to dangerous situations for drivers. Sometimes, officers just don’t have access to the tools they need to look into this. Other times, their departments aren’t even motivated to include it in their efforts.

That’s why it can be important to follow up with the authorities early on. If it seems they’re giving all possible factors a fair shake, families can generally rest assured they’ll get the full story. But when details aren’t adding up or it seems like authorities are rushing to conclusions, that can be a sign the crash may be better off in the hands of more thorough independent professionals.
