How Did This Accident Occur?
When a lot of folks read about a motorcycle accident, they just assume the motorcyclist did something wrong. This is an all too common assumption I encounter in my line of work, and it’s one that can cause problems. It is obviously possible this crash, like many others, involved a rider going too fast or otherwise being irresponsible. However, I know from experience that motorcyclists are no more reckless than the average car or pickup driver.
In fact, I’ve seen far more examples of people on four wheels getting motorcyclists hurt or killed by not keeping a proper lookout for the smaller vehicles. I’m not saying that happened here, necessarily, but it’s important folks are aware of this common negative bias. At worst, that awareness can help lead to more careful, thorough investigations. At best, it can prevent riders from being blamed for something they couldn’t actually avoid.
Do you agree that motorcyclists are treated unfairly? Tell me why or why not in the comments.
