I often talk about single-vehicle accidents like this, largely because they’re actually one of the most common accident types we get calls about. People might be pretty surprised to learn that these crashes can be far more complex than the news or even authorities portray them. In fact, they’re underestimated so often that authorities may leave their investigations unfinished once they have enough data to reach a “good enough” conclusion.

This attitude toward solo wrecks comes down to two key factors: First, the statistical majority are the driver’s fault, and second, they are generally considered low-priority by police. Put those together and you have a recipe for officers rushing through their on-scene investigations so they can file a report and move on to something else. That drastically increases the chances of missing important details; for instance, what if the vehicle in Guadalupe County was defective?

Some may roll their eyes at that, but less-common factors like defects cause plenty of accidents. Think about the General Motors “ignition switch” recalls a few years back: A lot of people crashed because their cars shut down in motion, due to nothing more than a heavy or jostled key ring. The issue caused a hundred deaths and countless other injuries, but a lot of those drivers were unfairly accused of just being drunk or careless before the truth came out.

Regardless of what led to this crash, the key—as always—is to let the evidence speak for itself. A seriously injured accident victim isn’t always able to tell their side of the story, so investigation into factors beyond their control is just as important as looking into factors they could control. I hope the officers in charge of this case agreed.
