Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle leaves the road and crashes without any clear explanation, it’s tempting to chalk it up to simple driver error. But real investigations should dig deeper. Cars don’t just veer off course without cause—something triggered that moment, and it’s worth asking what that was.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
In single-vehicle crashes like this one, there’s often a tendency to assume the case is straightforward. But unless investigators took time to document tire marks, reconstruct the vehicle’s path, and examine the driver’s behavior just before impact, they may have overlooked key evidence. Whether or not they conducted a full forensic review can make all the difference in understanding what truly happened.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
“Unknown reasons” should always raise a red flag. Issues like sudden steering failure, brake lockup, or even electronic control malfunctions could all lead to a loss of control. If the Cadillac’s data hasn’t been preserved and examined by someone who knows what to look for, it’s possible a defect contributed—and no one will ever know.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Today’s vehicles often log detailed data leading up to a crash, including speed, steering input, throttle, and braking. That information can help clarify whether the driver attempted to regain control or if the vehicle failed to respond. If investigators haven’t accessed that data—or didn’t think to—then critical facts could be missing from the picture.
Too often, single-car crashes are treated as open-and-shut cases. But when no one looks beyond the obvious, the real cause can go undiscovered. Digging deeper isn’t just thorough—it’s necessary.
Takeaways:
- Even solo crashes deserve detailed investigation, not assumptions.
- Mechanical or electronic problems can play a role and must be checked for.
- Vehicle data might explain the crash—but only if someone pulls it.
