How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to intersection-related accidents, most people are quick to assume that driver error is to blame. I’m not so eager to jump to that conclusion, though. Why? Because I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. Sometimes, things just don’t turn out to have been how they initially appeared on the surface.

I’m not trying to imply that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation, by the way. As far as I am aware, driver error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that the accident could have been a result of something as unlikely as a traffic signal malfunction. While they are excellent tools, they are certainly not infallible. What if the traffic light gave contradicting signals to the two vehicles involved and that is what led to the collision? True, it’s not very likely; but neither is it outside of the realm of possibility.

Hopefully the authorities are being as thorough and openminded as they should be as they investigate. If it appears their work is shortsighted, though, then a third party investigation can always be brought in, as well. That way another perspective can go over things and ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks.

In the end, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to how and why it took place. That kind of clarity just can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
