When a crash like this happens, it’s natural to focus on the immediate details: where it happened, who was involved and what injuries occurred. But beyond the basic facts, there are deeper questions that need to be addressed to fully understand what led to the accident. In any crash investigation, three critical questions should always be asked.

The first is whether authorities have conducted a thorough investigation. In cases like this, where a driver swerves to avoid another vehicle, it’s important to establish exactly what happened. Were there witnesses who saw the events leading up to the crash? Was the turning vehicle properly identified, and did its driver remain at the scene? Did authorities document skid marks, vehicle damage and other evidence that could shed light on whether the swerving driver had enough time to react safely? Without a detailed examination, it’s easy for important details to be missed.

The second question is whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash. A 1999 Ford Expedition is an older vehicle, and while age alone doesn’t mean a defect was involved, it does raise questions. Were the tires, brakes and steering components in good working order? Did any mechanical failure — such as a suspension issue or a loss of control — prevent the driver from recovering after swerving? It’s also worth considering whether there were any outstanding recalls on the vehicle that may have played a role. Since vehicle defects are often overlooked in crash investigations, it’s important to ensure the possibility is fully examined.

The third question is whether all available electronic data has been collected. In this case, the Expedition may not have an engine control module capable of storing crash data like a newer vehicle would, but that doesn’t mean electronic evidence isn’t available. Traffic cameras, nearby business surveillance footage and even cell phone data from those involved could provide crucial insight. Was the other driver distracted or speeding? Did the turning vehicle fail to yield? Answering these questions requires gathering as much objective evidence as possible.

Crashes like this often seem straightforward at first glance, but a closer look can reveal unexpected factors. While the immediate priority is ensuring that the injured driver gets the care he needs, it’s just as important to make sure that all relevant questions are answered.
