When I hear about a pedestrian being struck and killed on a road like FM 665 in the early morning hours—such as the March 8th incident involving a Dodge Charger—I’m reminded that these cases are rarely as straightforward as they first appear. Pedestrian fatalities, especially those that occur in low-light conditions, demand a careful and thorough review. To truly understand how this man lost his life, we have to start with three essential questions.

First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? That means going beyond noting that a person was in the roadway and examining whether the driver had sufficient time and visibility to react. Important factors include lighting conditions, the speed of the vehicle, whether the pedestrian was walking along the shoulder or the lane, and whether the area had any signage or markings to alert drivers. These details often get overlooked if the investigation ends with the assumption that the pedestrian was simply “in the wrong place.” A real investigation requires measurements, documentation, and, ideally, input from a trained accident reconstructionist.

Second, has anyone explored whether a vehicle defect may have contributed to the crash? While the involvement of a pedestrian might seem to suggest that the vehicle was not at fault, mechanical issues—particularly related to headlights, brakes, or steering—could absolutely influence a driver’s ability to avoid a person in the road. If the Dodge Charger experienced any kind of failure in the moments before impact, that information will only come to light if the vehicle is preserved and examined by someone who knows what to look for.

Lastly, has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected? Modern vehicles like the Dodge Charger are typically equipped with an electronic control module (ECM) that can record speed, throttle position, and braking data just before a crash. If that data shows, for instance, that the vehicle was traveling well over the posted limit or that no braking occurred before impact, it could shift the understanding of how this fatal encounter unfolded. Cell phone data and dash cam footage—if available—may also shed light on the driver’s awareness or behavior at the time. But this evidence is fleeting and must be preserved quickly.

At this stage, very little has been made public about the crash beyond the basic facts. But that lack of information only makes it more important to ensure every possible angle is explored. Pedestrian deaths are among the most complex incidents to investigate, and the community owes it to the man who lost his life—and to his family—to get clear, evidence-based answers about what really happened on that stretch of FM 665.
