How Did This Accident Occur?

When reading about a crash like this, most people probably would assume it was caused by a young driver who was distracted or fatigued. That may prove to be the case, but I’ve learned over more than 30 years of being involved in accident investigations that each conclusion should be based on facts, not assumptions.

A full investigation — built on witness statements, physical evidence, data from the pickup and any available video footage — should allow authorities to piece together what happened on F.M. 1314. Cell phone records could provide additional insight on what the driver was doing at the time of this crash.

An in-depth inspection of the Ford may be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash. That likely will require an outside expert because in my experience most law enforcement agencies do have the time or training this kind of forensic examination.
