Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I have folks ask me all the time why I “bother” to talk about single-vehicle wrecks when they all seem so straight-forward. In reality, though, they can be incredibly complex. Single-vehicle wrecks make up a significant portion of the kinds of accidents families call our firm about. This is generally because they’re not high on the list of priorities for police, and that can leave a lot of unanswered questions.

Sometimes, there are mechanical defects authorities don’t have the proper tools to investigate. There could be roadway issues locals have expressed concerns about that authorities aren’t adequately addressing. Drivers can be illegally over-served by bars who have yet to be investigated for their role in the crash. The driver may have experienced a medical emergency that wasn’t initially considered.

Despite these possibilities, the public and sometimes even the authorities are often content to just blame the victim and move on. But common or not, there are all kinds of possibilities to consider, and the evidence needs to be able to speak for itself. The key is whether or not anyone is actually investigating those possibilities.
