Accident Report

August 6, 2026, Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III was killed and seven were injured after an 18-wheeler accident at 5:35 p.m. on US 460.

According to officials, the crash happened several miles east of Lynchburg near US 460 and Cabin Field Road.

There was apparently a previous accident along US 460. Approaching the scene, Appomattox County Sheriff’s Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III and another deputy stopped at the scene to direct traffic. They reportedly were standing on the road while the patrol vehicle had its emergency lights on in the left lane. While there, an approaching 18-wheeler reportedly crashed into the scene, hitting multiple vehicles and Deputy Burlie Duvall.

Due to the collision, Deputy Burlie Duvall reportedly sustained fatal injuries. At least seven other people reportedly had injuries. Right now, additional details about the cause of the crash and potential charges are unavailable.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s awful to see yet another situation where an officer loses their life simply trying to keep the public safe. It’s all too common, and once the dust settles, it usually ends up being due to something stupid and completely avoidable, like drunk driving, fatigue, or distracted driving. It would not be unusual to see something similar happened here. Of course, that’s up to investigations and ultimately the evidence to say for sure. For all anyone knows, this could be the result of something unusual or perhaps even unavoidable.

For example, I had a case once involving a truck driver that experienced a medical emergency behind the wheel. That made the resulting crash seem unavoidable, but we kept investigating just to be thorough. As it turned out, the truck driver had a long list of known medical issues which made it all but inevitable something would go wrong if he remained behind the wheel of a commercial truck. His employer simply ignored these risks and put him on the road anyway. What initial seemed unpredictable turned out to be completely preventable upon a closer look.

Hopefully experienced investigators have a chance to look into this crash. Regardless of what happened here, securing evidence early on is almost always the best bet for getting answers for the victims and families involved. The sooner that happens, the more evidence will still be available to dig into.
