Accident Report
Yates County, NY — June 5, 2026, Bruce Rugg was killed and another person was injured in a dump truck accident at about 11:40 a.m. on State Route 54 near Dresden.
Authorities said a 1999 Sterling dump truck was heading east when it slowed suddenly to avoid a vehicle that was turning left and veered into oncoming traffic, crashing head-on with a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado.
Chevrolet driver Bruce Rugg, 59, of Penn Yan was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities.
The dump truck driver was flown to a Rochester hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Yates County crash at this time.

It’s not clear at this point why the dump truck left its lane. Had the driver been distracted before he had to stop to avoid the turning vehicle?
