How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, most people are quick to jump the gun and just blame the driver. I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades, though. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of truck accidents. I have become slow to jump to conclusions because of how many cases I have seen where less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation.

To be clear, I’m not insinuating that I know more about this specific accident that anyone else outside of the investigation does. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the truck to cause the wreck. These are decidedly complex machines, after all. What if, for example, it had a tire blowout? Or maybe it was dealing with an issue with the steering mechanism? Have brake failure or throttle issues been considered? Honestly, the list of possibilities goes on and on. On top of that, I would be interested to know whether or not the truck’s safety systems—such as the seatbelt—functioned properly. If not, then it is possible that a survivable accident turned into a fatal one as a result.

An in-depth vehicle inspection done by a team of trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck. These kinds of inspections are not generally routine, though, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities still don’t get one done, then a third party investigation can always take that step, instead. Plus, it never hurts for a second perspective to take a look at things and ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks.

In the end, the people left behind by the victim deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to not only how the wreck occurred, but why. That kind of clarity—real answers backed by solid evidence—just can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
