How Did This Accident Occur?
A single-car crash at this hour usually leads people to assume the driver was fatigued or intoxicated, but I’ve been part of enough accident investigations in my career to know that assumptions are often incorrect. It is best to wait until you can reach conclusions based on facts when the investigation is complete.
Investigators shouldn’t make any assumptions about a crash; they should simply collect evidence from the scene, data from the Hyundai and any available witness statements or video footage. Cell phone records may show if the driver was distracted at the time.
If they suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash, an outside expert likely will be needed to examine the vehicle before it is scrapped or repaired. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such inspections, in my experience.
A full investigation is needed to sort out what happened on U.S. 81.
