How Did This Accident Occur?

Drivers don’t expect to see pedestrians on the highway, much less in the express lanes, but it’s not clear at this point if either driver could have avoided a collision.

Investigators will try to reconstruct this crash by poring over witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the vehicles and any available video footage. They also should look into whether the first car had any mechanical issues that might have affected its ability to stop before hitting the pedestrian, but in my experience that may require an independent expert because most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such examinations.
