Janesville, WI — October 19, 2024, a worker was killed and one person was injured in a boom lift accident at around 10:30 a.m. at the Rock County Fairgrounds.
Rock County Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds off Memorial Drive and Randall Avenue.

It appears there was an “employee appreciation day” happening for Rock Energy Cooperative. During this time, there were apparently two people on a boom lift, a 59-year-old worker and a 62-year-old woman. Somehow, the two ended up falling from the boom, resulting in serious injuries. The worker was reportedly killed while the woman was taken to a hospital.
Right now, the exact circumstances surrounding the accident are unclear. Officials say the incident remains under investigation.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It stands out that only one of the victims described here was called an employee. The reason this stands out is because it can make the situation a lot more complex than a typical work accident. Most of the time, there are automatic processes in place for workers hurt or killed on the job. But if an individual who isn’t an employee gets hurt by work equipment, there is no on-rails, automatic process for them. They’re often left to navigate a rather complex legal maze, and that can be challenging without the right experience and legal tools. Hopefully steps are being taken here to ensure all those affected have an understanding of what went wrong as well as a clear path forward to getting a fair resolution.
