How Did This Accident Occur?
It is not clear what caused this crash at this point. Did one semi-truck rear-end another? Did the trucks collide while changing lanes? Did some kind of mechanical issue contribute to the crash? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but I expect authorities to unearth answers as they investigate this accident.
Authorities likely will scrutinize witness statements, physical evidence, data from the trucks and any available video footage of the crash as they work to piece together what happened on I-49. If they suspect a mechanical problem was to blame, they likely will need to turn to an outside expert. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training to conduct a forensic examination of these trucks, in my experience.
Investigators also should look at the trucking companies to ensure their drivers were properly vetted and trained and their vehicles were well maintained before they were put out on the road.
The family left grieving deserve answers to any lingering questions they may have about this crash.
