How Did This Accident Occur?

I can’t say one way or another what happened here without seeing evidence for myself. Getting that evidence after such a serious crash can be a lot more complex than folks may realize. It isn’t always just an automatic process that authorities handle from beginning to end. In fact, this crash happening out in a rural area actually concerns me. Let me explain why.

Simply put, I’ve been involved with countless accident investigations over a more than 30 year career. The amount of police reports I’ve seen leave out important information or make mistakes would stagger people. Usually, it’s because officers lack the proper tools to really dig into and preserve delicate pieces of evidence. Vehicle inspections, pulling electronic data, mapping out debris and road markings, looking for vehicle defects, analyzing roadway design—I can generally expect independent, professional accident reconstructionists to handle all of that. A police department that might feel it has higher priorities, however, isn’t always the best at handling deadly car accidents to the extent victims and families need.

To be clear, I’ve also seen plenty of thorough, careful, professional reports come from police departments, both urban and rural. Hopefully an experienced officer with the right tools was on scene to make sure those affected by this crash are getting all the facts. It’s just something people shouldn’t take for granted, and it’s a good reason to follow up with authorities as early as possible to make sure nothing important is slipping through the cracks.
