Accident Report
March 17, 2026, Assem Mahmoud and three others were injured following a car accident at around 9:40 p.m. along Fannin Street.
Authorities said that the accident happened in the area of the Fannin Street and Congress Street intersection. It appears 36-year-old Assem Mahmoud was in a Mercedes-Benz going southbound. A Nissan Titan was going eastbound. At the intersection, authorities say the Nissan may have run the light, and the vehicles collided.
Due to the crash, Assem Mahmoud was seriously injured. The driver and a passenger from the Nissan were also seriously injured. Another passenger had moderate injuries.
No further information is available at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities seem to believe one of the drivers may have run the light. That may sound like something they’d be more certain of, but it can but challenging to get clear answers immediately following a serious crash. The key is to make sure steps are being taken to fill in the gaps. Authorities aren’t always able or motivated to do that.
I remember a crash I handled a while back where two drivers were basically left blaming each other because the investigating officer was pressured to move on to other investigations. When we were brought on to look things over, though, we quickly found security video from a nearby business which clearly showed one of the drivers run the light. It might surprise folks how often official investigations overlook important evidence like that.
So, regardless of what happened here, my hope is that someone is working to preserve evidence. If not, then there may need to be another set of eyes looking things over.
