Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Single-vehicle accidents tend to be brushed off because people assume the driver must have done something wrong. However, there are all kinds of factors that need attention, which is why it’s important to make sure authorities are looking into them. That’s why I encourage people to consider some key questions after a serious accident like this: Are authorities examining the vehicle for defects, and are they securing electronic evidence?

In my experience, these questions can act as the canary in the coal mine. If authorities can show they’re digging into complex, subtle possible factors that require careful attention, that’s generally a sign they’re taking the investigations seriously. But if their answers come up short and leave doubts, that may instead be a sign they’re treating the crash as a low priority.

This can help families decide if they’d feel more comfortable with independent accident reconstructionists looking things over. If nothing else, they deserve to know they’re going to get the full story.
