Accident Report
May 16, 2026, Artis Smith was killed as the result of a car versus pedestrian accident around 9:49 p.m. along Bissonnet Street.
According to statements from the Houston Police, the accident happened just east of the Bissonnet Street and Sam Houston Tollway intersection.
Investigators said that 50-year-old Artis Smith was on foot in the westbound lanes of Bissonnet. While there, a Ford Fusion struck Artis Smith. Harris County officials report that Artis Smith died as a result of the collision on May 18.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperate with authorities. Police did not report any recommended charges. Additional details are unavailable right now.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When people see pedestrian accidents, and authorities let a driver go without charges, they tend to assume the pedestrian must have been in the wrong. That’s certainly possible, as crossing or walking on a dark roadway can be dangerous. That said, these reports are far from telling the whole story, and there could be extenuating factors that the pedestrian had little to no control over.
For example, is this a particularly dangerous stretch of road for pedestrians? Are there no sidewalks? Is lighting bad? Are there worn crosswalks or obstructed signs? Have locals frequently expressed concerns about pedestrian safety in the area, yet no improvements have been made?
Likely or not, these are questions I would expect a proper accident reconstruction to address. If authorities have done so, that’d be good to hear. However, these are often things I see authorities overlook. As such, getting the full story in a situation like this might require the victim’s loved ones to go beyond just waiting for authorities to fill in the blanks.
