One of the more significant challenges with single-vehicle wrecks is simply ensuring they get the attention they need. For a lot of police departments, they’re just not a high priority. Unless the factors surrounding a crash are readily apparent at the scene, authorities can easily overlook important details. Mechanical defects, road design flaws, over-service of alcohol, medical conditions, and lack of signage or lighting are examples of things authorities may not have the tools or experience to dig into the way more dedicated independent accident reconstructionists can.

It’s one of the reasons single-vehicle wrecks are a type of crash I get the most calls about. People are left with unanswered questions, and they have to find a way to fill in the gaps and get the answers they deserve. Maybe authorities were more thorough than these preliminary details suggest, but I learned a long time ago in my career not to take that sort of thing for granted.
