When a vehicle crosses multiple lanes of traffic before leaving the roadway and colliding with a fixed object, investigators must consider a range of factors to understand what led to such a catastrophic outcome. The May 13th crash on Interstate 91, where a northbound vehicle lost control and struck a tree after crossing three lanes, presents a case that demands close scrutiny. To determine what caused the vehicle to veer off course and whether anything could have prevented the fatal outcome, investigators must focus on three essential questions.
First, has the crash scene been thoroughly examined to reconstruct the vehicle’s movement and assess roadway conditions? Crossing multiple lanes suggests either a sudden maneuver or a prolonged loss of control. Investigators should evaluate whether the road surface was compromised by debris, weather, or worn pavement. They should also consider the presence of curves, traffic density at the time of the crash, and any signs of evasive action. Physical evidence such as tire marks and vehicle damage patterns can provide insights into whether the driver attempted to regain control or if the vehicle drifted without correction.
Second, has a mechanical or safety system failure been considered? The sudden deviation across lanes may have been caused by steering issues, brake failure, or problems with the vehicle’s stability control system. An inspection of the vehicle’s mechanical condition is necessary to determine whether a component malfunction played a role. In addition, the effectiveness of safety features such as seatbelts and airbags must be assessed to understand how the vehicle protected its occupant during the impact.
Third, has electronic data from the vehicle been retrieved and reviewed? Most modern vehicles, including the Honda CR-V, are equipped with electronic control modules (ECMs) that record vital data in the moments before a crash. This includes speed, throttle input, brake usage, and steering behavior. Analyzing this information can confirm whether any corrective actions were taken and how the vehicle responded. If dash cam footage or traffic surveillance is available, it may provide additional context about surrounding traffic or unexpected obstacles.
Single-vehicle crashes involving a loss of control across multiple lanes and impact with a fixed object are rarely random events. These three investigative questions—focusing on the crash environment, vehicle functionality, and digital records—are key to developing a clear and factual understanding of what occurred. That clarity is essential for informing those affected and for guiding efforts to reduce the likelihood of similar outcomes in the future.
