Accident Report
April 14, 2026, two people were injured due to an ambulance versus 18-wheeler accident at 8:30 a.m. along US Highway 64.
Initial details about the crash say it took place at the US 64 and State Route 14 intersection, just south of Winchester in Franklin County.
Authorities said that an ambulance was transporting a patient to a Winchester hospital following a previous crash. While doing so, the ambulance and a semi-trailer somehow collided at the above intersection. The ambulance overturned due to the crash.
Due to the accident, one of the paramedics sustained serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene. The patient from the ambulance was transferred to another ambulance. No other injuries were reported. At this time, additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
There isn’t a lot of information about what happened here, but I have to wonder if the ambulance had its lights and sirens on. If it did, that’s usually about as avoidable as a vehicle can get under normal circumstances. Did this involve a truck driver who was on their phone? Were they going too fast or ignoring cross traffic? Did the ambulance rush through the intersection without making sure the coast was clear? Was this just an unavoidable accident neither driver could reasonably avoid?
I find that a lot of people think a driver hitting an emergency vehicle is automatically at fault, but that’s just not true. The law is nuanced, and it’s important to know the full context. In all the chaos of getting the patients help, though, my hope is authorities will have the time and resources to preserve as much evidence as possible surrounding this crash. A commercial truck wreck is complex enough without it being loosely connected to a previous crash and involving unusual circumstances. That requires as thorough an investigation as possible, whether by authorities or by independent professionals.
