Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Pictures of this crash scene show a very chaotic situation, and it’s important to follow up with authorities early and often after serious commercial vehicle accidents like this. In my experience, authorities become so preoccupied with clearing the scene and helping the victims—rightfully so—that accident reconstruction may take a back seat.

This is why I often get calls from victims and families months after a crash who waited patiently for authorities to get them answers only to end up with more questions than answers. If authorities can show that they’re handling a crash carefully with the right tools and experience, then they can reassure the victims and families that their situation is in good hands. But if authorities can’t provide clear, satisfying answers, that can be a family’s sign that the crash needs to be in the hands of independent investigators.
