Kaufman County, TX — December 26, 2024, one person was killed while Alyssa Kelly and two others were injured following a car accident at 7:00 p.m. along F.M. 148.
According to authorities, two people—24-year-old Alyssa Kelly and a 24-year-old man—were traveling in a northeast bound Chevrolet Equinox on F.M. 148 in the vicinity north of County Road 4061 when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Equinox failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left of center, entering the oncoming lane of the roadway. There, it was involved in a collision with a southwest bound Hyundai Accent occupied by a 42-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy.
The woman from the Accent suffered fatal injuries over the course of the accident, according to reports. Kelly sustained severe injuries while the 8-year-old boy and the 24-year-old man were moderately hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a crash results in a fatality and serious injuries, a thorough investigation is essential to determine how and why it occurred. In my experience, understanding the contributing factors in such incidents requires careful attention to three critical questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? A vehicle veering into the oncoming lane raises immediate questions about what caused the driver to lose control. Investigators should examine physical evidence, such as tire marks, vehicle damage, and the final resting positions of the vehicles, to reconstruct the sequence of events. Witness statements and any available surveillance or dashcam footage could provide additional context, particularly regarding the Chevrolet Equinox’s movements before crossing the center line.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the accident? Mechanical failures, such as steering malfunctions, brake issues, or tire blowouts, can cause a vehicle to drift out of its lane uncontrollably. A forensic examination of the Equinox is essential to identify or rule out such possibilities. Additionally, the Hyundai Accent’s safety systems, such as seat belts and airbags, should be reviewed to ensure they operated as designed to mitigate the impact’s severity for its occupants.
Finally, has all relevant electronic data been collected? Modern vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox and Hyundai Accent are often equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that capture critical information, such as speed, steering, and braking inputs leading up to the crash. This data can help clarify whether the Equinox’s movements were consistent with driver input or indicative of a mechanical issue. If available, nearby surveillance footage might also provide key insights into the conditions leading up to the collision.
Accidents involving severe outcomes, such as fatalities and serious injuries, require comprehensive investigations to uncover all contributing factors. By addressing these questions, investigators can work toward providing a clearer understanding of what happened and why. A thorough investigation is the least that can be done to ensure every possible factor is carefully examined. For the loved ones of the woman who lost her life and for Alyssa Kelly and the others injured, obtaining these answers is an essential step toward clarity and closure.
