Accident Report

March 18, 2026, an off duty police officer was injured due to a suspected drunk driver accident at about 2:30 a.m. along East Houston Street.

According to authorities, a police officer had recently left his station near the Houston Street and Commerce Street intersection on a motorcycle when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the motorcycle was struck by another motor vehicle.

The person who had been behind the wheel of the striking vehicle may have been under the influence at the time, according to news reports. How Did This Accident Occur?

I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of car accidents over the last three decades. Because of that, I feel like a have a pretty unique perspective. Like most, I want to know whether or not the person who struck the officer’s motorcycle was under the influence. A question I also have that others probably don’t consider—if it does turn out that the driver was under the influence of alcohol—is where did the driver get their alcohol?

When it comes to alcohol involved accidents, decisions made before the driver even got behind the wheel play a direct role in the outcome. For example, if the person was overserved my someone else at an establishment that sells alcohol, then their decision to continue serving contributed to the eventual collision. Thankfully, Texas has something called Dram Shop Law. It’s a tool to ensure that everyone with a hand in the wreck can be held accountable. Hopefully, authorities cover all their bases, not getting too caught up in the evidence at the physical scene to find the root setting of the accident.
