San Antonio, TX — April 12, 2024, one person was injured due to an alleged drunk driver accident late Friday night in the area of I-35 and Southcross Boulevard.
According to preliminary statements from San Antonio Police officials, the crash took place along northbound lanes of the interstate following an initial accident.
In the initial crash, authorities say that a driver was in a Toyota Matrix allegedly driving drunk, and they crashed into the median barrier. The driver then apparently fled the scene on foot, leaving the wrecked car in the lanes of travel. Some time later, it appears a tour bus swerved to avoid hitting the stationary vehicle, but it then crashed into a Chevy Silverado and a Toyota Corolla.

Due to the second collision, one person in the Chevy Silverado had injuries described as serious. It’s unclear if anyone else was injured. Authorities say they located and arrested the driver of the Toyota Matrix. They accuse that driver of intoxication assault and failure to stop and render aid causing serious bodily injury.

If authorities did indeed apprehend the person responsible for all of this, it would no doubt be positive to see some accountability. But even if that driver faces all kinds of charges, that may not be full accountability for this crash. The simple reason for that: drunk drivers who cause accidents are often over-served by bars who also can be responsible for a serious crash.
Late at night on a Friday, bars, clubs, restaurants, and other establishments are packed, so they serve patrons as much as possible, often illegally over-serving many people. That’s what makes these hours some of the worst in terms of likelihood of being in a drunk driving crash. But too often, authorities will overlook the providers those drivers were coming from. That allows those establishments to slip through the cracks and continue over-serving customers until someone inevitably gets hurt again.
Here’s why this all is so important. I’ve seen the world of good it does to bring negligent alcohol providers to light to face consequences. In my experience handling personal injury cases against hundreds of alcohol providers, negligent establishments that faced criminal investigations, liability, fines, and/or license suspensions cleaned up their act. Not only did the victims and families see justice done for the wrongs done to them but also they were reassured that their dedication to seeing those alcohol providers held accountable would help prevent others from getting hurt in the future.
Ultimately, I can’t say right now what all happened here nor what all authorities are currently looking into. But there’s plenty of reasons in situations like this one to ask if authorities are truly getting the whole story.
