With single-vehicle wrecks, one of the bigger challenges is getting past all the people who jump to conclusions. Even authorities can be quick to overlook some possible factors just because they seem unlikely.
For example, I’ve been handling car accident cases for 30 years now. I’ve rarely ever seen authorities investigate possible vehicle defects. Brake failure, accelerator issues, steering column failures, faulty seatbelts or airbags—common or not, these things happen. Sometimes, officers just don’t have access to the special equipment needed for such complex factors. Other times, their supervisors are pressuring them to move on to other responsibilities, so they move on without actually investigating the crash thoroughly. Either way, this inevitably results in crucial details slipping through the cracks unless there are more experienced investigators around to pick up the slack.
