Harris County, TX — December 31, 2023, Alex Zapata Bernandez was injured as the result of a car accident at around 3:20 a.m. along Windfern Road.
According to preliminary information from authorities, the crash happened in the area of Windfern Road and Twelve Lakes Boulevard, just north of the Sam Houston Tollway.
Officials said that 32-year-old Alex Zapata Bernandez was in a Ford Focus which was traveling along Windfern. At Twelve Lakes, the vehicle somehow went off the side of the road and crashed into the stop sign. Following this, the car overturned.
Due to the accident, Zapata Bernandez reportedly had serious injuries. There did not appear to be anyone else involved in the crash. Right now, the cause of the accident is unconfirmed.

As often as I caution folks that there are all kinds of unavoidable factors that can lead to a car accident, I wouldn’t be surprised if some people hastily assumed the driver here did something wrong. Single-vehicle wrecks still bring out all kinds of assumptions. Is it common for this sort of thing to be the result of speeding, alcohol, distraction, or fatigue? Sure, but ruling out things like road hazards, manufacturers’ defects, medical conditions, and even faulty roadway design takes evidence. Maybe authorities have more of that evidence behind the scenes, but these public details certainly don’t seem like they’re telling the whole story.
