Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Authorities claiming someone ran a light and caused a crash is obviously a serious claim, but it stands out that authorities didn’t report any potential charges or citations. It could be that there’s a lot more to this story than just an individual reckless driver. That could mean that preliminary investigations alone won’t be enough to truly address the problem that led to this accident.
Have authorities obtained the driver’s cell phone records? Did any dash cameras or nearby security systems catch the accident on video? Has electronic data from the vehicles been pulled? With this being such a large truck, was the truck being used for work? Was this an inexperienced driver or one with a history of accidents? Did the vehicle any sort of mechanical defects, such as braking issues?
These are the kinds of questions I’d expect to see a thorough accident reconstruction answer. I generally rely on independent specialists who I know have the time and tools to get these kinds of answers. Perhaps authorities here have been able to be equally thorough in their own efforts. However, if it seems they’re not asking these same kinds of questions, then it may be that their efforts aren’t digging deep enough to really help the victim’s loved ones understand what went wrong.
