Anytime a worker doesn’t make it home to their family, it’s important there are as thorough investigations as possible to find out what went wrong, whether there needs to be accountability, and how to prevent other workers from being harmed in the future. Despite what a lot of people think, OSHA is not the beginning and end of this process. In fact, Texas happens to have more complex work fatality laws than any other state in the country. A lot of families find themselves having to advocate for solutions themselves rather than having an automatic process to help them. That can be a legal maze. OSHA reports can help, but they’re usually just one piece of the puzzle. So as serious as these preliminary reports seem, there’s likely a lot more to this family’s story than the official reports suggest.
