Brownsville, TX — June 27, 2026, Abel Barrientos Jr. was killed in a car accident at about 9:45 p.m. on Padre Island Boulevard/State Highway 48.
Authorities said a 2014 Buick Enclave allegedly failed to yield while turning left from Ruben M. Torres Boulevard when it hit a southbound 2014 Jeep Cherokee, causing the other vehicle to crash into a traffic light pole while the Buick continued driving.
Jeep driver Abel Barrientos Jr., 26, died July 5 from injuries suffered in the crash, according to authorities.
The Buick driver, a 31-year-old woman who had three young children with her, subsequently was charged with causing an accident resulting in serious bodily injury or death, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Cameron County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Police have concluded that the Buick driver was responsible for this crash, but what if they got it wrong? It doesn’t happen often, but this accident deserves a full investigation to determine if the Buick driver had a medical emergency or her SUV had an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism.
Investigators will pore over vehicle data, physical evidence, witness statements and any available video footage, while cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time. An in-depth inspection of the vehicles will be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical problem played a role in this crash.
The investigation should answer any lingering questions the Jeep driver’s family has about this accident.
