How Did This Accident Occur?

Did the driver fall asleep behind the wheel after a long date of work? Was she reaching for her cell phone or something else inside the car? Did another vehicle for the Ford off the road? Did the SUV have a problem with its steering mechanism? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but these are the kind of things that authorities must look into as they work to reconstruct this accident.

Physical evidence, witness statements, data from the Ford’s engine control module and any available video footage should help, while cell phone records could show what the driver was doing at the time of the crash. An outside expert likely will be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this crash, because most law enforcement agencies lack the time or training to conduct a forensic examination of the SUV, in my experience.

A thorough investigation will provide much-needed answers for the injured driver and her family.
