How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s easy to read about this crash and figure it was caused by driver error or fatigue, but what if another vehicle forced this car off the road? Or if the car had a mechanical issue that affected its steering or brakes?

These may be unlikely possibilities, but I’ve seen these scenarios play out in crashes during my career, so I know the value of a thorough investigation. Evidence from the scene, data from the car and any available video footage can help reconstruct the accident, but it may take a deeper look to determine if the car was operating properly at the time of the crash. Most law enforcement agencies do not have the time or training for a forensic vehicle, which should be conducted by a qualified expert in a laboratory setting.
