Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to gun safety, things are pretty straight-forward. First of all, there are the four rules of how to handle a firearm safely:
- All guns are always loaded. Period.
- Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target (and you have made the decision to shoot).
- Be sure of your target, what’s beyond it, and what’s in front of it.
If someone can’t follow these rules, then they shouldn’t have access to a firearm. This accident raises serious questions, then, about whose gun this was, how someone got access to it, and how they were able to shoot a young child.
