According to officials, a 44-year-old Houston man was in a tractor-trailer going northbound on the highway. Details suggest there may have been an issue with the truck’s steering mechanism, and the truck lost control. It went into a skid, then overturned onto the median.

As a result of the crash, the truck driver sustained serious injuries. There didn’t appear to be anyone else involved in the accident. Right now, no further information is available.

I have to wonder what steps authorities have taken to investigate this possible mechanical issue. Frankly, it’s not the sort of thing authorities tend to look into on their own. Departments are rarely equipped to investigate potential defects. That’s one of the reasons I always make sure independent accident reconstructionists look into these possibilities. They have the state-of-the-art tools and training needed to differentiate between something like a manufacturing issue or a lack of maintenance. Police may have access to those resources, or perhaps the department involved also took steps to enlist the aide of a better-equipped professional. In my experience though, folks looking for answers about a sudden mechanical defect are better off actively looking for someone who has experience getting those kinds of answers.
