Accident Report
August 10, 2026, one person was injured following an 18-wheeler versus overpass accident at around 12:20 p.m. on I-87.
According to officials, the crash happened along the southbound lanes of the interstate in the South Nyack area near Orangeburg.
Reports say and video shows an 18-wheeler going along the interstate approaching the overpass for South Broadway. At the overpass, the 18-wheeler trailer hits the overpass, then overturns along the shoulder. The truck hit a car parked along the shoulder, reportedly injuring the driver of the car.
No other injuries were reported. Authorities recommended citing the truck driver for having an over-height vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
The video of this was pretty shocking, and it didn’t really show anything out of the ordinary on the surface (no raised dump beds, no loose concrete handing off the bridge, no parts sticking up on the trailer, etc.). If this incident is like most others, then one of two things most likely occurred. Either the person who planned the truck driver’s route didn’t check to make sure they met clearances, or the driver or their employer didn’t check the truck’s height. Maybe even both played a role. Let’s consider why those possibilities are important.
Generally speaking, companies and drivers are responsible for making sure their trucks can safely operate on the roads they’re taking. Encountering an overpass that is too short for a particular vehicle is a well known hazard companies have to watch out for. If they fail to plan their route properly or ignore the dimensions of their vehicle, they risk letting something like this happening.
So, while a citation may be warranted here, my hope is that someone is digging into the driver’s employment status and any potential supervision that may have been responsible for putting this 18-wheeler on a road it couldn’t safely travel. Failing to look into that might lead to future accidents and future harm.
