Accident Report
July 17, 2026, four people were injured due to an 18-wheeler accident at 1:30 p.m. on Interstate 35.
Initial statements from authorities say that the crash happened along southbound lanes of the interstate. There was apparently traffic because another vehicle stopped due to a flat tire. In that traffic, reports say that an 18-wheeler swerved across multiple lanes and hit a military Humvee and a minivan.
Due to the crash, at least four people were taken from the scene in ambulances. Their conditions weren’t specified. At this time, additional details about the accident are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
I certainly don’t know more about this specific crash than anyone else reading the news stories. However, I know from experience that 18-wheelers crashing in traffic like this is usually the result of inattention or fatigue. Maybe this was some one-in-a-million, unavoidable vehicle defect. That’s something any proper accident reconstruction should be able to rule out. But even in a situation where a mistake led to this crash, things could still be far more complex than people may realize.
For example, take a crash I handled a while back involving a truck driver being coerced into driving recklessly by his employer. We were investigating a crash where a truck driver been behind the wheel for over 20 hours straight. Instead of just taking that as open-and-shut, we dug into why the truck driver did that. What we found was a whole company pressuring drivers to meet ludicrous deadlines and threatening them with their jobs if they didn’t cut corners to do so. It was inevitable someone would get hurt. It was just a matter of when.
Again, I’m not saying that happened here. I’m saying that investigations need to treat accidents like this seriously and look at things from all angles. Even if some evidence seems inconsequential, it should be preserved so the victims involved in the crash have as much information as possible going forward. Whether that’s from authorities or from independent investigations, victims and families tend to have better outcomes when they focus on getting all the facts early on.
