Accident Report
May 16, 2026, a man sustained injuries due to an 18-wheeler accident just before midnight along Highway 71.
According to initial details about the accident, it took place a couple miles south of Columbus near County Road 101.
Investigators said that a 50-year-old man was in Buick traveling northbound. That Buick reportedly was on the “wrong side” of the highway when it crashed with an oncoming 18-wheeler.
Due to the accident, the Buick driver had serious injuries, authorities said. There were no other injuries reported. Additional details remain unconfirmed.
How Did This Accident Occur?
To be clear up front, I don’t know more about this crash than what’s been released publicly. However, when I see mention of a vehicle on the “wrong side” of a highway like this, I have to wonder what exactly authorities mean.
If a vehicle is driving the wrong way on a highway, that can raise serious red flags for things like intoxication or a medical emergency. The former can be particularly challenging if evidence shows a local alcohol provider unlawfully over-served the victim, as they could bear responsibility for contributing to the accident. That’s not something authorities look into all that often.
Alternatively, if the vehicle was on the wrong side of the road because it suddenly lost control, that raises a whole lot of other possible problems. Was there a tire blowout? Did the vehicle have some kind of defect? Did the vehicle hit something in the road? Did the victim swerve to avoid something or someone?
I know some may think I’m just being nitpicky about language, but it’s important to know what investigators are looking into after a crash like this. If they’re being too lacks or too hasty, important evidence can slip through the cracks. That’s something families need to know about so they can take appropriate steps (if necessary) to put the crash in more thorough hands.
