Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A multi-vehicle crash like this can be quite a bit more complex than just a typical car crash. As such, it can be important to ask some key questions early on:
- Do authorities have the time, tools, and training to match the complexity of the crash investigation?
- Are authorities inspecting the vehicles for potential defects?
- Is all electronic evidence being preserved (from cellphones, vehicles, cameras, etc.)?
In my experience, these are good questions to ask early on to gauge if the crash needs to be handed off to independent accident reconstructionists. If authorities can provide clear, convincing answers, that usually means they have everything under control. But if their answers are lacking, it may be up to independent investigators to pick up the slack.
