Accident Report

September 7, 2026, two people were injured following an 18-wheeler accident at around 3:45 a.m. along Interstate 80.

Preliminary information about the accident says that it happened off the exit for East Main Street/NJ-53. It appears that one person was in a Hyundai car going westbound along the interstate. An 18-wheeler was going eastbound when it suddenly lost control. This led to the truck crashing through the median and into westbound lanes. There, the truck and the Hyundai collided.

Due to the crash, both drivers suffered reportedly minor injuries. Authorities did not report a specific cause of the crash.

How Did This Accident Occur?

A truck losing control like this can happen for many reasons. The questions is whether or not it was reasonably avoidable or foreseeable.

For example, I’ve seen countless situations like this where a truck driver was on their phone or fatigued due to working long hours. This raises questions about whether they’ve had any past issues with driving while distracted or violating their hours of service limits. Or, it’s possible their employer is pressuring them to drive unreasonable hours.

Alternatively, this could be a situation relating to a mechanical failure. That’s often due to maintenance issues, which means investigators would have to inspect the truck to find what went wrong and also dig into the truck’s maintenance history to see if it was being worked on regularly. If all of that checks out, then it’s possible an unforeseeable manufacturing defect led to the crash, and the driver truly had no control over the situation.

This all may sound like routine stuff, but I’ve had countless truck accident investigations come across my desk where authorities never so much as glanced at these things. Generally speaking, they tend to focus on looking for chargeable offenses at the crash scene. If they don’t find that, they might just move on. Meanwhile, the victims and families involved need far more information to tell their side of the story.
