Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
18-wheeler accidents generally bring an inherent level of complexity, given just how many factors can be involved. It’s important that investigators have the time, tools, and training to dig into all of those possibilities. Otherwise, something subtle might slip through the cracks.
This is why I always highlight the importance of following up with authorities as early as possible. Did they map out debris patterns and road markings? Did they pull Engine Control Module data from the vehicles? Were there any nearby cameras with a view of the road? Have the vehicles been inspected for defects? Did officials interview independent witnesses?
These are just some of the questions a proper accident reconstruction should have satisfactory answers to. If families follow up with authorities, and their answers fall short, that can be a sign that independent investigators need to step in to see if authorities missed anything important.
